Punjab Government to Dismiss ‘Political Cases’ Against PML-N Workers

A dramatic change in the political dynamics of the region has been signalled by the Punjab government’s announcement that all “political” cases against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers will be dismissed. The action is expected to relieve legal issues that PML-N leaders, office bearers, and supporters have been facing in recent years.

Party insiders claim that the Punjab Advocate General has been instructed by the state government to create an exhaustive database of all these instances. The PML-N members of parliament and workers from Lahore and other parts of Punjab have been singled out by the government for prompt review and dismissal in situations where the state acted as the complaint.

Numerous of these charges were brought in relation to prominent political occasions, like the sizable demonstrations held in support of PML-N leaders Maryam Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif’s return. Conflicts with police enforcement frequently followed these rallies, and party members were accused of terrorism and other offences. Numerous charges of this kind were filed by the previous government, which was headed by Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, in an attempt to suppress political protests.

Hundreds of PML-N supporters were arrested during Maryam Nawaz’s appearances before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), and additional legal proceedings were initiated. As part of the strategy to dismiss these politically driven cases, the Advocate General’s office has started gathering records, as per the latest direction from the Punjab government.

This ruling is a big step in the right direction towards resolving long-standing political complaints and bringing justice back to the province’s legal system. For PML-N employees, many of whom have been embroiled in protracted legal disputes, the action signifies much-needed respite and a fresh phase in Punjab’s changing political climate.
